Coaching for University Students

Wellbeing Coaching

Attending college can be one of the most stressful times in a person's life.  In the 2006 ACHA-NCHA College Health Survey, 34% of students surveyed nationwide reported stress as the number one impediment to academic performance.  Given the identified negative impact that poorly managed stress can have on students’ academic performance and overall well-being, it is imperative for colleges and universities develop interventions that help students better learn to manage stress.

Starting in 2009, Learning Journeys partnered with St. Catherine’s University to provide coaching to better equip students to successfully deal with stress.  Later that same year, the University of Minnesota decided to provide coaching to their international students as well.  The program untilized at both universities was the Just for Me™ Wellbeing Coaching Program.  The methodology connects students to their own choices and values so their steps align with who they are and who they were becoming.  It helps them build a strong foundation of wellbeing so they can flourish.

When wellbeing is enhanced, it inoculates people against stress.  Individuals who focus on their wellbeing are more likely to be happy, healthy and whole.  They can see opportunities within obstacles, stretch beyond their limitations and contribute at a higher level than those whose wellbeing is deficient.  Wellbeing is the foundation to wellness.  Wellness cannot be fully obtained and it will never be sustained without building a strong foundation.  Wellbeing is the key to a thriving life.

Our Just for Me™ Wellbeing Program is designed to enhance individuals physical wellbeing, strengthen their relationships, expand their ability to manage stress and further enjoy what they do each day. Just for Me™ focuses on increasing life satisfaction.

What students are saying:

    • After attending Just for Me, I feel so elated.  I am in a different world; a world that enlightens all.  I have grown and developed tremendously.  I am more optimistic about living and studying in Minnesota, I feel more confident about myself, I have made friends and above all, I have learned to listen to my inner self, make my surroundings appealing and peaceful, value other people because they all boost and improve my wellbeing.
    • I take more time to deal with myself and pay attention to my mental development.
    • Because I am more confident and satisfied with myself my happiness influences the people around me.
    • Having a safe place to unwind and debrief really contributed to my survival this semester.
    • First of all, I can understand myself as a complex entity of experiences, emotions, and physicality better through the program.  The crushes I have face in my everyday practices impact not only how I feel at the moments of these crushes but also how my body responds to them, how my mind is controlled by them or attempts to control them and how my identity is reshaped by them.   I clearly learned these dynamics with-in and with-out myself.   I had not been able to wisely handle the crushes in the past in the way I do now.
    • I became more confident of myself by participating in the program.  It does not mean that the program has offered me with a chance to confirm myself as a superior person to others.  It taught me that I was capable of developing the “I” of the past, reshaping the “I” of the present, and redefining the “I” of the future.  In short, I could consider myself as full of potential without measuring myself in the frame of other people’s standards.
At last, I learned how to communicate with others by demonstrating myself as an attentive listener, as a reliable friend, and as someone whom people would want to be with.  I used to be overly self-conscious, shy and unhealthily sensitive in having a conversation with people.  However, I feel comfortable meeting with new people and leading conversations with them.
