Change Doesn't Happen In A Vacuum

Questions to help clients avoid being swept up in the "what ifs" and instead prepare for the "why nots."

Change doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and if our clients aren’t prepared, their conviction toward their goals can be drained faster than the latest Dyson could ever manage. It may seem obvious that someone lacks commitment when they avoid making a change, even when it’s desperately needed. However, commitment is often not the issue. Many times, it’s the fear of disturbing the relationships or environments they navigate that holds them back. They anticipate the cost of disruption, overestimate it, and simultaneously underestimate the cost of staying stagnant. This leads them to sweep the issue under the rug, setting the stage for a disruption they can neither control nor prepare for.

In these moments, the following questions can be helpful:

  • What are you striving to uphold or maintain by not acting?

  • What personal price do you pay (daily, weekly, monthly) the longer this lingers?

  • What is the cost or impact on relationships if you create change?

  • How long can you stay in a holding pattern?

  • What else is impacted by doing so?

  • What gets your attention instead? For what reasons?

  • What signs are you waiting for to tell you that change is inevitable?

  • When that time comes, where do you want choice and control regarding the change?

  • How will you ready yourself for the change?

  • Who will you need to prepare, and how will you prepare them?

  • How do you need to set up your environment to support the change?
