Let's Dive In:
The longer clients linger between the story they’ve left behind and the one they’re still developing, the more likely they will convince themselves that the past wasn’t so bad. They may downplay the discomfort of the status quo to avoid the uncertainty and unease that come with being in between stories.
So, how do you help clients maintain momentum toward the story they truly desire? It’s crucial to assist them in building a solid framework or "scaffolding" to keep them on track. Without this support, there is a greater chance they will revert to the familiar paths they once vowed to leave behind.
To ensure this scaffolding remains strong, guide your clients to clarify the following:
Experience
What will you and others never experience if you maintain the status quo?
What will never change if you return to the status quo?
The Story
What is the story that is waiting for you?
What is the story you are ready to leave behind?
Identity
Who do you need to become to make your story a reality?
Who do you need to stop being if you are fully committed to your future story?
Values
What values will be compromised if you maintain the status quo?
What values will be honored if you choose to live the story that is waiting for you?
Behaviors
What behaviors will support the identity needed to make your envisioned story a reality?
What strategies can you use when old behaviors threaten to derail your progress?
