The story we tell ourselves about who we are profoundly influences our ability to reach our goals. The challenge lies in recognizing these stories and being open to changing them. While adjusting what doesn’t work might seem obvious, our minds often work hard to convince us that the cost of change is higher than the reward.
When we consider shifting our identity story, three common questions tend to pop up:
Who am I without my current story? We find comfort in the familiar. “If I stay as I am, I know what to expect and how to belong.” We wonder, "If I change, will I still fit in? Will I still be understood?"
What if everything changes? Our identity stories are woven into others. Changing one can feel like tipping the first domino, sending other stories tumbling, which can make us hesitate.
What if I don’t like what I find? There’s often a fear of what lies behind the curtain of our stories, so we leave it firmly in place, telling ourselves it’s better left untouched.
These questions can seem daunting, but answering them is key to unlocking a more powerful and authentic version of ourselves.
